Alaska
fishing: Juneau area
 Listen to a
RealAudio interview (8:18) with Alaska Department of Fish and Game Area Sport Fish
Biologist Mark Schwan (907/465-4270) for additional information about Alaska fishing in
the Juneau area.
Species
Marine boat fishing is the major angling activity in the
Juneau area. The number one species of interest to anglers is king salmon, followed
closely by halibut and coho salmon. Pink salmon, chum salmon and red salmon are also
caught in the area, along with Dolly Varden and trout. Crab are available.
Geography
The Juneau area is the largest in SE Alaska and the most
varied. The landscapes are comprised primarily of steep mountains and deep fjords. The
mountains are covered with dense rainforest, except where logged or otherwise
disturbed. Glaciers in the coast mountains are common and some come to tidewater.

Transportation
Juneau is served by daily jet service from the continental
United States. Other communities are served by frequent commuter flights. The Alaska
marine highway calls at Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Hoonah, and Tenakee Hot Springs. Float
planes serve other locations. Haines and Skagway are the only communities directly
connected to the North American road system.
Weather
Southeast Alaska weather is unpredictable but tends toward
wet. The summer months are usually relatively dry by Southeast Alaska standards, but as
the summer ends, the fall storms begin. Anglers should be prepared for wet weather. Even
overcast days with drizzle can be pleasant. The least favorable fishing days are those
with wind and rain.
