Saw them in October
Posted by Michael Strahan on Apr 28 2006
Hey Sam,
I saw the two cubs in October, down past the guardrail hole below the Russian confluence. I'm concerned that they will end up being problem bears, as there is now nobody around to keep them away from people. Of course, the sow in question was doing a pretty poor job of it to begin with. I saw her drop the cubs off at the ferry crossing and go back in the woods while the cubs raided everyone's fish caches in the water there.
I don't want to get into a debate over who was there first, etc, etc. My point is that based on the behavior of this sow, it was only a matter of time until somebody started shooting. I fear that the two cubs are next, unless they somehow get the right idea and keep out of trouble. Last time I saw them, they had no apparent fear of man though.
Lest I be misunderstood (yeah, I know, how could THAT ever happen?), I am dead-set against what happened with the sow and other cub. I think the person who shot them WAY over-reacted. But... these were problem bears in the making. It happens.
