Oncorhynchus Nerka

Due to the feeding habits of the Sockeye.(Plankton) I don't understand why they would ever intend on feeding on anything larger than the Plankton.
Why do they sometimes chase a lure or Fly? I suppose it could only be reaction to something strange or threatening in its area. I have read about people that have caught these fish using fly fishing techniques other than legal snagging in the mouth, but for the past 16 years fishing the Kenai, and russian river and running a fish camp, I have yet to be convinced of any other way. I would love to be convinced.
