I agree with the previous post. Fly fishing for reds can be tricky from what I have heard. I would go to Trustworthy Hardware in Soldotna and ask them what they suggest. A good idea for you is to google search " fly fishing red salmon " and such. There is so much information available that way. I am from North Carolina and recently moved to Nome. Obviousely I didnt know much about salmon when I got here. I bought a few books. Most notably, "Top Water, flyfishing Alaska" It is an incredible book and I would recommend it to anyone. I bought several books and this by far had the most detailed info on times, techniques, flie, etc... Worth every dime. A google search would locate it quickly. Likely available on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. There is just no subsitute for local knowledge and the flies used for reds may vary from different parts of the same state. I know it isnt reassuring to say "go to the hardware store and get your flies". But this is Alaska. I went in the store and they have a comprehensive selection of fishing equipment. You will be surprised. If you were to bring some anyway, I would refer to various sources online and check out some of the many books. The forementioned book would be top choice. Cross reference various sources and see the 2-3 flies that all of them have in common. You could feel good purchasing some after that kind of research had been done. There are some forums and such on a few websites that you can look over and find specific information and post about reds. some are www.alaskaflyfishingonline.com
www.fedflyfishers.com
www.flyanglersonline.com
www.flyfishingcollection.com ;     Happy searching
