Kasilof bank fishing
Posted by Sockeye Charlie on Apr 21 2006
David,
Your timing should be perfect for the Kasilof 1st run kings. They should be peaking that week for sure. The bank fishing scene on the Kasilof can be a bit crowded as the good bank fishing seems to be limited to an area which is famously labeled the "People's Hole". However, the fishing there is excellent that time of year and with a little bit of hiking and patience you will be rewarded. My advice is to stay at the Crooked Creek campground and fish late at night when most folks are up at their campsites. The lower light conditions can have excellent results on the kings, the drift boats are mostly off the water and the fish are not as spooky.
Bait and rigging for bank fishing isn't as crucial as much as where your bait is drifting through the run. I like to throw corkies on short leaders about 2-3' with just enough weight to keep your line bumping the bottom but moving quickly. Check the regs, but I am pretty sure bait is also allowed, so eggs are a good option for some "plunking" if you like that type of fishing. Mostly, watch what the people catching fish are using and tie up some rigs that match theirs.
Good Luck!
Chuck
