FISHING IDEAS FOR KIDS
Posted by danattherock on Apr 19 2006
IF I WERE TAKING A 4 AND 7 YEAR OLD, I WOULD CONSIDER TARGETING GRAYLING. THEY ARE EASY TO CATCH AND SHOULD BE GOOD FISHING IN MAY. I AM NOT VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE KENAI PENNINSULA BUT HAVE READ MANY PLACES ABOUT VARIOUS LAKES THERE THAT HOLD EXCELLENT GRAYLING POPULATIONS. UPPER AND LOWER JOHNSON LAKES AND PARADISE LAKES PARTICULARLY. A MODEST PRICE TO FLY FROM MOOSE PASS (JUST NORTH OF SEWARD) WILL TAKE YOU TO LOWER PARADISE LAKE. I AM PLANNING A TRIP IN SEWARD FOR LATE JUNE AND LOOKING INTO THIS AS WELL. YOU COULD START SEARCHING ABOUT THAT. GRAYLING ARE VERY EASY TO CATCH. HIT THE WALMART IN ANCHORAGE AND GET A LIGHT 6 FOOT ROD AND SPINNING REEL. NO MORE THAN $35 EACH. GET A BUNCH OF SMALL SPINNERS. BLUE FOX VIBRAX AND MEPPS ARE FAVORITES. SMALLER SIZES. I HAVE HAD BEST LUCK WITH 1/4 OZ ON GRAYLING. GOLD AND SILVER ARE GOOD. VARIETY IN COLORS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA. THEY ARE GREAT FOR KIDS AS THE HIGH SUCCESS RATE WILL KEEP THEIR ATTENTION. ALSO, IF YOU LOOKED INTO THE BUSH FLIGHT FROM MOOSE PASS TO LOWER PARADISE LAKE, THAT WOULD BE AN ADVENTURE ALL BY ITSELF. I SUSPECT THE AREA IS BEAUTIFUL. A GOOGLE SEARCH ON LOWER PARADISE LAKE WOULD BE USEFUL FOR YOU. THERE IS A CABIN THERE YOU CAN RENT FOR THE NIGHT IF YOU CHOSE TO. THERE IS A BOAT THERE THAT CAN BE USED IF YOU RENT THE CABIN. I THINK THE CABIN IS LIKE $40/NIGHT OR SOMETHING. IT IS OWNED BY THE STATE AND RENTS CHEAPLY FROM WHAT I REMEMBER. VERY SECLUDED FROM WHAT I HAVE READ AND THE ONE PICTURE I SAW WAS BREATHTAKING. PERHAPS A BETTER EXPERIENCE THAN PAYING $500/FOR A CHARTER TRIP. FOOD FOR THOUGHT. THERE IS ALSO A LAKE NEAR MOOSE PASS CALLED VAGT LAKE. THERE IS A CAMPGROUND NEAR THERE AND A TRAIL THAT GOES TO SOME GOOD FISHING FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND. I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TO DO SOME RESEARCH ON GOOGLE FOR THAT AS WELL. I THINK IT WOULD BE HARD TO BEAT FOR FAMILY TIME. I WOULD PREFER TO GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH A LITTLE BIT AND AWAY FROM THE CROWDS. LET THEM SEE THE REAL ALASKA. JUST SOME THOUGHTS. GOOD LUCK.
