The top has a cap on it with a hole in the cap. Across the cap is a cross piece for a handle. You locate a dimple in the sand signifying a clam is there and you place the gun over the dimple and push down on the cross piece handles. This will capture the clam inside of the gun. You then place your thumb over the hole in the cap and lift the gun back up out of the wet sand. Once you have the gun withdrawn you release your thumb from the hole and the cross section of sand along with your clam will drop out on the beach.
