I have a GoreTex coat and pants bought from REI close to ten years ago that to this day have never leaked or soaked through. Coat is double ply GoreTex and pants are single ply. Pockets are angled properly so very little drip when hands are in pockets. They've been through the washing machine many times. I have sat in open boats in rain all day long on many occasions, hiked for endless hours in the rain....never got wet inside. Have taken good care and they still look almost new. I will say that the combo was quite expensive (about $600) so maybe there are different qualities and weights of GoreTex.
