Kevin,
A week's vacation won't be nearly enough time to really get a feel for the place, but it's better than nothing. I'd come on up and check it out. You probably won't be in a better position to do it later in life. Young, single, no debts... sounds like a no-brainer to me!
Drop me a PM or contact me when you get to Anchorage; I'd be happy to help if you like. I moved here when I was 27 and haven't looked back since. It's a wonderful place; I've lived in several Western states, including Hawaii, and I wouldn't trade Alaska for any of them.
