As it relates to sport fishing
Posted by B_M on Nov 20 2005
The other answers here are correct, a ling cod and black cod (sablefish) are different fish.  The only thing I might add is that you will likely never catch a black cod while sport fishing.  I fish them commercially and we set our gear about 2,000+ feet deep.  We never catch them shallower than 1200 feet, but the deeper you go the better it gets.  Apparently the young ones will spend time in shallow water, but I've never caught one while sport fishing.  Ling cod are a much shallower fish.
