The what handgun, or is this handgun good enough question get's raised quite often, also goes for shotguns.  The truth is, the only arm that will reliably/consistantly stop a bear is a large rifle, ie 375 H&H on up.

Now, the real key is being aware of bear habitat and behaviour, and how your actions can keep you from getting into trouble.  Bear encounters aren't that common, and actual attacks are rare.  The typical year will have 3 mallings, one jogger and two hunters.  Hunters travel quietly so inadvertanly sneak up on bears.  Joggers travel like game animals, and are typically oblivious to their surroundings.

I'd say keep the 40 at home, less to deal with when travelling, and unless you are extremely proficient with it's use, and stoke it with proper ammo, it'll be pert near useless for defense against a bear.
