Rockfish reality...
Posted by AlaskanAuthor on Nov 03 2005
ADF&G's regs (the yearly newsprint publication with the kid art cover) does a very good job of explaining how to preserve the species. If you follow their advice you'll be doing your share to protect this agressive feeder.
Nevertheless, at times it still winds up on the end of your line. And yeah, I also hypo them in the hopes of giving them a survivor's chance. (I do the same with undersize FL grouper and am an old hand at it, as are our charter skippers)
Rockfish are a beautiful species. AK's favorite fish artist Ray Troll (the t-shirt's worn by many of you) is a master of freaky fin art and his website is www.trollart.com. I've met Ray and spent time with him in Ketchikan. His rockfish print is framed and signed and hangs proudly in my home. The point of all this is that I'd rather admire the species than kill it.
Don't be surprised that in the very near future ADF&G tightens up the rockfish quota. With increasing tourism and angler pressure, this is bound to happen...
