[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] rockfish release methods Posted by DreamCatcher on Nov 03 2005 This past summer I ran across an article by Oregon Sea Grant about a program recommending ways to release rockfish that have experienced barotrauma (bulging eyes and inverted stomach upon surfacing). They have come up with some practical ways of resubmersing fish quickly and with at least some survival. Florida has a similar program but is using a hypodermic needle to deflate the swim bladder. After reviewing these techniques and talking with fish biologists I think the recompression technique is far less injurous than bladder deflation. Alaska State regs for S. Central say you can't possess more than 2 non-pelagics but they don't tell you what to do when you catch the third, or fourth... Gull and eagle food more than likely. By the way a mature yelloweye rockfish can be over 100 years old. I wonder how long areas like PWS can sustain harvests on old geezer fish. California has closed areas to sport fishing due to rockfish populations being wiped out. Take a look at the attached link if you are interested in ways of releasing rockfish. BTW, I do enjoy eating rockfish but try and limit my take. Hope this post generates some ideas and comments on the subject. Next: charter IFQ's homerdave Nov 03 2005 Message Thread:
