Northern Pike
Posted by TroutsMan on Aug 23 2005
Just got back from a longer then excepted fishing trip on the tanana river system. We were fishing primarily for Northern Pike. If anyone out there is looking for alot of action and a fierce fighting fish try these fighters..
We headed from Manley hot springs down streanm abot 60 miles to a little known creek called Fish Creek. This creeks water is open to the public but the shores are closed to the public and I belive owned by Native corperation.. While fishing here at Fish creek we managed to catch and release well into the hundreds of fish for the for of us that were there.. The average size fish was arround 8 pounds with several in the 15 to 20 pound range..

Being from the lower 48 this is by far the most exciting and aggresive fish I have ever fished for.. The closest thing from my neck of the woods would be a Brown trout and that isnt saying much.
Dbl hook ups were very very common while fishing with the anchor down while tripple hook ups hapened abot ever hour and 3 or 4 times we managed to get 4 fish on at a time.. Try keeping all of those away from each other lol.
The gear that we used to catch these fighters was a medium action 7' to 7'6" ugly sticks with 12 lbs test and a 12" wire leeter for all those teeth. The spinners that work best were Pixies and just about  everthing else that moved through the water.
Proof of this is when a companion of mine hook a big ole 20pounder and was told to secure his poll, Which was actually mine lol- or he would lloose it.. Not 10 seconds later the fish did an amazind flop and away he went line lure poll and reel.. Needless to say he was the brunt end of the joke for a good week or so:) While loosing this rig we then stared to drag the bottom in hopes of snaging onto it.. After an hour only the Native Alaskan keep going with a good size trebile hook and a big ole wait.. Not too much after setting this rig up a 15 pound pike must have gotten pretty upset with wathcing this go on and on se he decided to Hit the bare hook and hit it hard.

Well enough about catching Pike. If anyone ever heades out that way and runs into Tanana for resuply dont forget to stop into Tanana comercial. This family owned busniess is by far the highlight of my trip for they were very helpful when we lost the impellor on the boat.. Not only did they let us in but they also got new parts flown into us from Fairbanks..
Done ranting.
Thanks
Troutsman.
