Gator,  I have visited Alaska a dozen times since 2000, loved it so much that I have just moved here. I bought a Mossberg slug gun in 2001 and a .44 magnum S&W in 2003.  To tell you the truth, I have never even test fired either one, and have gotten out of the habit of carrying them when I go out fishing. I live in Kodiak, and if anyone tells you the bears are not often seen on the road-accessible areas, they are wrong.

But my first several trips to AK, I felt better having something along capable of making a BIG noise, just in case. I recall an account of a predatory black bear episode not far from Fairbanks that happened a few years ago. A woman geologist was attacked in a manner that made it clear she was a prey item. She was able to call for help to her dropoff copter, and lived to tell about it. I also recall a story about a solo woman dogsledder who was stalked by a polar bear (mighty whitey) along the Arctic Ocean several years ago. She reluctantly killed the bear with a single shot from a .357 magnum, which does not fit many people's idea of a bear deterrent.

I would say bring the gun as a comfort item. You might sleep better with it around, and it gives you a little relief to think at least you could defend yourself if a brown fuzzy starts chewing on you.

Jst a few rambling thoughts,   have a great trip up.    Kid
