Hey Will,

The chums have been in the chena for quite awhile now, pretty much since they started counting kings though it didnt get better till mid july.  The boat launch area where it dumps into the chena at chena lakes first thing in the morning before ANY boats have gone through is good.  At times the schools will hold right there making fishing a arm busting proposition.  Bring some marabou flies also for this as it's pretty shallow and extremely slow though the fuschia bunny flies will out fish them 3 to 1 they might sink just a tad to fast.

I prefer unweighted and letting my fly lines take the flies down if at all possible though a lead eye fuschia bunny fly is killer when the water is deep enough.

A 5 would be a hoot though I did get into a couple that put a pretty good hurtin on my 7 GL4, the 5 would be nothing short of a riot.  Though I might go to marabou stle flies as the bunny flies tend to hold a ton of water weight.  I tie popsicles in solid orange, fuschia, and a bright pink. I like a bump of chenille first to help keep some shape in the water to the fly (helps give it mass).  Then, tie in the first piece of marabou by the tip 1/3rd the way back from the eye of the hook right smack in front of the bump of chenille.  Wind till the base of the blood feather starts to get thick (the thinner the better, thick quills will crack and break apart).  Tie off as normal, then tie in 6 to 8 strands of Kyrstal flash.  FOld it over the thread essentially doubling the amount of strands and tie in.  Clip staggered endds just shy of the marabou.  Tie in another marabou feather warp, do a 3rd, wrap.  Leave enough space behind the eye to wrap some hackle.  I like red for these three though you can use any colors on the rainbow.  Don't hesitate to mix these colors.  Btw, bring some black ones with NO flash on them.  When they work they are killer!

Keep the leaders light, they were pretty shy on the salcha.  I was using straight 12lb mono Trilene XL about 9 feet of it.  IF they wont hit on a light leader your best be is to go longer.  If you are fishing them in faster water you'll have to go shorter however realize most of these fish wont give you even the time of day.  I found it odd as most other rivers catching chums is a pretty easy affair!  These fish were bent on getting up stream for some nookie in the gravel beds :D.

I am leaving for the weekend to do a float on little willow so you wont see me there.  I'll be there early next week I am sure.  Look for the little blue toyota with a white camper shell and a mountian bike in the back.
