underrated fishery in solitude
Posted by TradBow on Aug 04 2005
I spent the afternoon today down on the Salcha.  The river has been having 3000+ run days of fish now for the past week plus.  We fished a little last nite however not really fishing the river much in the past and only for kings we didn't pick a very productive hole though fish came through in mass constantly.

You've got it.  I was fly rodding some chums.  They are one heckuva riot.  First and foremost there was NO ONE around tonight.  Next there is fish everywhere.  The nite before we found fish however they were reluctant to do much at all at any of our offerings.  Today however was a different story.  After seeing two spots I hit one, that is driveable none the less and had a blast.  Site fishing for a fish with the tenacity of a chum is a riot even more so on the long rods.

I don't understand why we all must fish to kill when it comes to fishing in general but it seems like the trips I have no desire to freeze a fish seem to turn out the most productive in many more ways then one!

If you havent done it directly you should.  Look for pools of slower water.  These fish were not holding however they would make a pass through the slower water giving me enough time to site fish them and watch each and everyone take.  Along with a few fish that came to the surface to take my offerings while I was looking for more, sneaky devils, not once but 4 times!

The only thing I can say about choice of tackle is anything fuschia with a unweighted fuschia bunny fly and some pearl kyrstal flash being tops (that goes for kings silvers and chums!).  I managed to break a 3/0 hook along with bending another, one of them was a gamagatsu.  Instead of passing the time thinking of things you should do before the coho's really start running, get out and bend a rod on one of the nastiest fighting coolest marked fish we have!

GO DOGS ;)
