Fly Reel
Posted by Dean Denter on May 20 2005
Guess I expected a few comments about the mono, yes I use it to strip line off and the quick drag tightening.  Works well and my Okuma has caught several hundred reds, however I fish fast water and it does not do well on my knuckles.  It was 59.95 at Soldotna Hardware a couple of seasons back, good deal for the reel but would not mind something new with more drag.  Also it has several repairs on it but everything you use will eventually need some repair even with proper maintenance.  Fly line has too much resistance, tried it and had to put to much lead on for me.

For flies I use just a hook with knitting yarn, nothing fancy but cheap (box of 100 Gamakatsu hooks for $30 will last a week, $3 worth of yarn will last a life time).  Use to get the Kenai bugs but I go through a lot of hooks and replace them often as they dull on the rocks.  Tried it all and if you want to fish for 10 or so days a person has to determine the most cost effective method.

Will be in much warmer places next summer and attempting to outfit myself a little better this season.
