reels

jeesh moose you dont even need to modify it.  I used to walleye fish out of a float tube with a fly rod and a small spinning reel, fit nicely!

I agree though, there is no point to use a fly reel at the price of a decent reel (even a cheap fly reel is much more then the average spinning reel).  Not trying to sound like a fly purist snob as they are a hoot to catch on a long rod with whatever you are reeling with.  If you are hell bent on doing it you might look at ebay.  You can find plenty of cheapo to medium reels for a good price on there and you have plenty of time.  If it where me find an old STH with the cassettes.    Reason being as you can easily and CHEAPLY change out the spools to use it with fly line OR mono vs spending half the cost of the reel for a spare spool.  They have a pretty dog gone smooth drag and hold a ton of line!  There are a ton others out there though and they'll all work just fine.  Stay away from the 15 buck cheapos, even a red will wear them out pretty quick.  If you even humor the idea of chasing anything larger then a red on a regular basis try and find something with a disc drag of some kind, and stay away from the pfluger medalists.  They maybe great for trout however there is no way to palm the reel (apply more drag using the palm of your hand exerting slight pressure on the bottom of the reel).  This is a MUST imho for any salmon or large fish fly fishing regardless if you are using mono or not!
