More MacDonald info
Posted by AkKings on May 01 2005
Pete,

July 11th for salmon is pretty early, the MacDonald doesn't have a king run (earliest returning salmon) and the silver fishing is just starting to get going in the surrounding saltwater areas, you might find a few sockeye or pink salmon but I wouldn't expect alot of them, I would focus more on trout fishing.
As for the halibut, I would suggest trying to book a trip with Yes Bay Lodge for a day, there really is no spot around the mouth of MacDonald creek that would allow much bank fishing (You'll see what I mean when you fly over the area) other then the dock at Yes Bay Lodge and I don't think they allow their guests to fish from the dock.
As for the weight issue, I would only bring 1 of the guns (whichever your most comfortable with) I don't remember seeing many bears in the area until mid August when there are alot of salmon in the creek, its not going to be like the McNeil river area where at any given time there can be numerous bears in sight, you may not see any while your there. Also on the issue of weight, alot of the forest service cabins will have some items in them, its been 10 years since I've been to that cabin but there were basic cooking utensils, (pots, pans, plates) I don't remember what else but do remember being suprised how well set up it was, it wasn't just an empty cabin.
Good luck.
