Steelhead on P.O.W.
Posted by AkKings on Apr 22 2005
Terry,

What part of the island will you be hunting/fishing? Any of the main rivers, Thorne, Karta, Klawock or Sarkar should have decent steelhead fishing through about mid-May, don't overlook some of the smaller, no-name streams either, leave the bait at home (not legal on P.O.W.) My first choice would be a float and jig (simple and very effective) small spinners (Vibrax, Mepps) also work well as does the basic corky and yarn. Buddies of mine do well tossing flies at them but I'm not a fly-fisherman and won't try to tell you what to use as I really don't know.
As for rockfish-fishing, if you have a boat with a depth sounder just start looking for ledges, pinnacles or kelp beds and drop jigs on them, rockfish aren't picky they'll eat just about anything you drop to them.
If your anywhere near the town of Craig, go into Logcabin Sporting Goods and ask them which direction to go, there usually very helpful and will point you in the right direction.
Good luck!
