Back Country Navigation
Posted by rcblust on Oct 24 2004
My name is Dick Blust. I live in Rock Springs, Wyoming, where I serve with the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office. I've trained hundreds of people, including law enforcement officers, rural firefighters, search & rescue volunteers, backpackers, hunters, geocachers, and other outdoor recreationists of all sorts in back country navigation.  My approach focuses on a simple, hands-on, practical, problem-solving system that emphasizes using the combined, interwoven resources of map, compass, and GPS. My approach to maps is grounded in using USGS topographic maps, including the 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 scale Alaskan topos, generated by a program called MapTech "Terrain Navigator."

Terrain Navigator for Alaska's 1:63,392 scale maps can easily be set to print out the areas you select on standard 8 " X 11" sheets of paper - each covers about 40 square miles - and grids them for the UTM coordinate system, enabling accurate, quick position-plotting.

My entire training course is presently being posted on the Internet at https://www.kifaru.net/navigate1.htm .   The "Map" Section of the training is already posted, with the rest  - compass, GPS, and "Putting It All Together" - soon to follow.

Access to the course is free, and I can field questions and comments here on the Alaska Fishing Forum.

Check it out; I'll be happy to handle any questions or comments that arise.

Dick
