fly lines
Posted by George on Oct 16 2004
Otterb., Good question! and I'm with you on this one- more questions than answers. Frequent cleaning/treating of fly lines is often stated but I'm not sure of the reason unless chemicals (in water we fish and where fish live??) attack the line or grungy grit builds up?? I think it would take a polymer chemist and a bunch of R&D testing and research to give a sure enough, scientifically based answer. So- I think an occasional cleaning is about it. I would think line abuse like over-stretching, kinking or constant abrasion against rocks or gravel would be the the mechanical causes of line failure. I also think UV and/or ozone exposure would be the the most likely chemical culprits on any polymer based material over time. Kinda like the fly rod discussion- some lines may be better than others, all things considered- who knows?
