why folks would spend $ on brand names
Posted by DriFliJunkie on Oct 11 2004
I fish an R.L. Winston and wouldn't trade it for the world. It cost more than 700 though. More like 950. Worth every penny; worth three rods made by mass producers. Even if I snap it in a car door, they'll repair or replace it unconditionally.

In my opinion, Orvis is the ultimate "just buying it for the label" rod maker. But, rod action is such a personal thing that the maker that works best for me might be the worst for you. I prefer Winston and Sage or loomis. The latter two for big water and heavy flies, the former when I need to be delicate.

The other companies (Aside from Sage and Loomis) you mentioned are ok I suppose, but they're not a good value because they can actually make it harder for beginners to cast well. St. Croix, Cortland, etc. are poor quality even if they don't cost much. I think you might be confusing price and value just a little.

Tight lines.
