Yep, Red Shirt Lake
Posted by JimAK on Aug 26 2004
I will be making my annual trip into Red Shirt Lake on the weekend of the 11/12.  I'm worried that the hot, dry summer might make for poor pike fishing, although this is normally a good time of year.  The trip in is via a 3-mile trail starting from the South Rolly Lake campground (there is a special parking area just for the Red Shirt Lake trail users).  At the end of the trail is a campground, and there are also 4 public use cabins available for rent.
You can rent canoes from Tippee Canoe (www.paddlealaska.com) and you can see cabin availability and make your reservations at www.dnr.state.ak.us/parks/cabins.

Having done this before, my best advise is this:  There is very little firewood and the water is not fit to drink.  So, if you're walking in, bring a portable stove (the hiking stove setups work great) and a way to filter your water.  Or, you can charter a number of different air taxis from Anchorage or Willow... you can bring your own firewood this way, and not have to worry so much about being skimpy on the weight of your gear since it will not be on your back.
