Making $ in AK
Posted by Paul H on Aug 16 2004
The best gig for a single guy is an oil patch job.  You work for 2 weeks, room and board payed, then get two weeks off to enjoy the state.  Salaries are pretty good, and the working conditions are relatively safe.

Commercial fishing isn't what it used to be.  Sure, there are some boats making money.  Those are the boats that have an experienced crew.  If you are a new guy, you'll end up on the boats that aren't run as safely, and aren't making as much money.

The good thing about an education is, you can always fall back on your degree to open some doors.  If you don't go to school, your options will be more limited.  I here your frustration, but those 4 years are time well spent, so long as you strudy something you are interested in to keep your grades up.  You also have the summers off to come up here and enjoy the state.  If only I'd been so wise when I was younger.  You could even go to school up here.  I'd suggest looking at UAF, as they have a pretty good math, science and engineering departent.  UAA is more arts related, kind of a joke school IMO.
