Kenai River Update
Posted by Jim Durkin on Jul 31 2004
Many of us fish the Kenai every year.  We depend on it for reds and kings and silvers to fill our freezers.  This year (at least for me) was dismal.  Every time I fished the Kenai, the commercial fishermen were out in full force.  With a little research, I discovered that the commercial fisherman had there nets pulled a total of 7-12 hours periods during the month of July.  Thats a total of 3-1/2 days that there commercial guys WERE NOT fishing. They're only supposed to fish on Mondays and Thursdays.

Granted, the Kenai did reach its escapement goal for reds and kings.  However, the fishing was average at best.  Yes some folks slayed them, but for the most part fishing was spotty for the entire month July.  Just last weekend the commercial guys harvested 1,800 kings.  No wonder why we're not seeing any 80 & 90 pounders come out of that river anymore.

This is another example of the Murkowski Administration and ADF&G giving preference to the commercial industry over resident and non-resident sport fisherman. If you care about the Kenai River, please call ADF&G commissioners office at (907) 465-6085 and/or Murkowskis office at (907) 465-3500 and voice your opinion!
