Here is what I think

If you hit a rock under power your going to break off the skeg. I think you would do more damage with a protector on it. In the sand your prop will still hit. Alot of the natives buy them on the Yukon river and still break stuff alot.

The only time I see any advantage would be trolling or going slow.
