You can rent Personal Locator Beacons (PLB) here in Anchorage from Eagle Enterprises.
For those not familiar with PLB units, they are arguably the single best tool for getting rescued in Alaska. ELT units have about a 98% false alarm rate, therefore when an ELT goes off, the rescue boys start investigating. When a PLB alarms, they head for the chopper. This came to me straight from the horse's mouth, from folks staffing the Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) here on the outskirts of Anchorage.
My personal choice is a satphone and a GPS unit though; this is because the phone allows me to verbally communicate (you can't do that with a PLB), and the GPS gives me my coordinates. Perhaps someone will come up with a satphone that transmits GPS coordinates! That would be the best!
