The Lead Dog.
Posted by BW on Apr 06 2005

That reminds me of a funny story.

The family and I were headed up north to a warm springs (White Sulpher) for the very first time, and I was trying to find a short cut which would get us out of the open water and into protected water.  The short cut is called Phieles Passage and was used by an old timer who chartered it to out run the old Cutter Revenue Service (running booze.)

Anyhow as we near the entrance, which is hard to find as it's just a bunch of small islets near the shore, with lots of breakers around, we spot another boat.  He's right near where I think the entrance should be, so I assume he's just come out of the pass.  We head towards him and sure enough it's the entrance.  So I start in using a Garmin 176 with the Blue Charts for the area, and paper charts.  About halfway through my wife says 'hey, that guy is behind us'.

Turns out he was doing exactly what your advising, waiting for someone else to lead the way!  :)  Luckily for him, we all made it through without leaving bottom paint on any nuggets.
