I don't know what to tell you, You do not need spend a $100-.
Anyway this subject is way to complicated to discuss on this forum.
To make my point, I would have to explain how a battery works and a lot more.

There is a way you can prove if you need a $100- tube or if a homemade $10 tube will work just fine, do a corrosion control test on your boat using a $100 tube, repeat the test using a $10 tube to see which works the best.
