My parents shrimped commercially in the Sound until 1989, so we still use the pots we used to use then, albeit with some modifications to the cover material to conform with current laws.  Anyhow, we never have used additional weight on the pots, just a few sinkers on the buoy line to keep that from floating up if we set too shallow.  That being said, our old pots are about 10 pounds each, so they act as their own anchor needed.
