I would go so far as to say that this book should be required reading for any flyrod-equipped angler planning an Alaskan trip. I would also recommend it for those who've yet to make up their minds to go. The information contained in this book will help the first-time flyfisher as well as the seasoned professional in Alaska. It will allow any angler to approach their experience being much better prepared with the proper tackle, flies and enthusiasm to meet their quarry. Individually, species by species, Route gives first hand accounts of his experiences with Alaska's gamefish. His stories are filled with personal anecdotes and detail. He covers the techniques from fishing for Alaska's majestic king salmon to the beautiful arctic grayling. Each chapter includes a map of the general area, seasonal timing info and the proper equipment and flies to use in each instance. He even has a chapter on flyfishing Alaska's saltwater. Route was a prolific flyfisher as well as an author, photographer and flyfishing guide. He has worked throughout the state. He was a year-round resident of Alaska residing in Anchorage. He was also the author of the companion book to this one (Flies For Alaska, A Guide To Buying and Tying ) I couldn't help but feel the author's obvious love for this incredible country and the fishing opportunities it affords.
