His quest in the pursuit of big game has taken him from Alaska, to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories, along with the states of Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Washington and Wyoming. He now resides in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley of western Montana. Formerly he lived in Alaska for 14 years where he worked a forester and as a guide. As a bush pilot he has logged 6,000 hours flying a Cub. Gilchrist spends about 150 days a year hunting and photographing big game.
