Big Game Big Country by Dr. Chauncey Guy Suits

 $22.95
Big Game Big Country by Dr. Chauncey Guy Suits

ISBN: 0-937708-28-3.  Softcover.  224 pages.  62 B&W photos.  Copyright 1987,  First softcover edition 2006.  Dimensions: 5.25" x 8.25" x .50"

From the back cover:  Big Game, Big Country chronicles more than a decade of high-quality wilderness hunting by one of this country’s more distinguished big game hunters, Dr. Chauncey Guy Suits.  Following a tradition of his forebears a generation earlier, the author repeatedly ventured into the wilds of Alaska and Northwest Canada on hunts never ending before the twenty-first day.  During those marathon forays, he surveyed immense ranges and astounding populations of big game, including Dall, Stone, and Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep, moose, caribou, and Black, Grizzly, Kodiak and Alaska Peninsula Brown bear.  Almost all the animals bagged by Dr. Suits were extremely large trophies, some of which are recorded in Records of North American Big Game, published by the Boone and Crockett Club of New York.  Relatively few outdoorsmen in this day and age will account for such an outstanding bag of trophy game, or even savor a fraction of wilderness experiences related by Dr. Suits.  Big Game, Big Country, truly is intended for all active hunters.

Table of Contents

I  Dall Sheep of Alaska Range
The Alaska Range is the extension of the mountains of the Alaska Peninsula into central Alaska, to Mt. Denali, and then toward the east.  It is the mountain "backbone of Alaska.  This hunt explored an area 200 miles NW of Anchorage.  It lies beyond Rainy Pass, on the west bank of the South Fork of the Kuskokwim River.  Sheep, caribou, moose and black and brown bears abound.

II The Chugach, and Kodiak
The Chugach is the mountain range immediately east of Anchorage.  It is noted for its extremely rugged terrain, exceptional game, and difficulty of access.  The dall sheep at the head of the record book have been taken here.  The first part of this focused on the mountain goat, but included sheep.  The second part was transferred to Kodiak Island for brown bear.

III Stone Sheep and Smoke
The stone sheep live in the area between the Peace River, in central British Columbia, and the Yukon.  These magnificent sheep bear a gray coat that blends perfectly into the rocky tops, where they live.  When the area is covered with a layer of smoke, from smoldering forest fires, finding the sheep becomes a special problem.

IV  The Alaska Game Highway
The Alaska Peninsula is an incredible game highway for the migratory barren ground caribou.  To the east, moose and brown bear abound.  The main hunting problem is to manage the almost impassable terrain laced with endless marshes, bogs and standing water, almost always in the presence of extremely foul weather.  But the rewards are substantial.

V  A Family Affair
A second sortie into Post Lake for dall sheep yields some fine heads and some incredible experiences.  We meet a grizzly, "face-to-face" and survive.  Some amateur hunters turn in an excellent performance.

VI  Head Hunting, in B.C.
Our bush pilot bends the airplane on a sandbar landing, but all survive.  We get into the middle of a band of 25 goats, and a "shoot out" ensues.  Big rams are hard to find, but we get one on the last day!

VII  Hunting Sheep on A Shoestring
Idaho has some Rocky Mountain Bighorns, but they don’t play fair - they live in timber.  We finally get an inside track, via a tennis shoe, but someone else finds the shoe.  Pity!

VIII  The Packers of Post Lake
We had been taking packers for granted, but their performance on this hunt was critical to the outcome.  One confronted a charging grizzly, and won, and another rescued a ram trophy from the face of a cliff.
