In Bear vs. Man, writer-photographer Brad Garfield chronicles many of these bear attacks, including dramatic photographs and stories told by victims who survive and companions of those who didn't. Along with these riveting stories, Garfield discusses bear behavior and instincts and the various reasons for the increase in bear attacks. He instructs readers on the best advice and equipment that can protect a person during an attack, offers tips on how to behave when traveling in bear country so as not to become a victim, and implores people to respect bears and their habitat. In the final chapter, the author imparts his knowledge of how to photograph bears in the wild while remaining safe and causing no harm to these awesome and powerful animals. Mark was pinned to the ground trying to shield his head from the relentless onslaught of claws and teeth. He realized his only chance was to play dead - easier said than done when being attacked by a grizzly. He tried to go limp. His only thought was, "I am going to be eaten alive." Finally, Fred found the spray lying on the ground. He again rushed the bear. He knew the spray was about gone, and if they had any chance of survival, the last shot to be close and directly in the bear's face. He charged in close and fired the spray. He hit the sow with a direct blast in her face and held the button until the bottle was empty. The sow retaliated by turning and attacking Fred, hitting him again and knocking him off his feet. This time, she tore into his left side. He tried to fight but knew they were now defenseless. Both men were badly injured. They were out of ideas, energy and, most important, repellent spray. -Excerpt from Account of Attack of Mark Metheny.
