The Killer Whales of Prince William Sound by Craig Matkin  $12.95  $9.75
The Killer Whales of Prince William Sound by Craig Matkin

ISBN: 1-877900-03-6.  Copyright 1994.  Softcover.  54 B&W pictures. 4 Drawings.  103 pages.   Dimensions: 9” x 6” x .25”.

From the back cover: Craig Matkin received his M.S. in marine vertebrate zoology with an emphasis on marine mammals from the University of Alaska in 1977.  Since then he has been a commercial fisherman and vessel owner/operator in the Prince William Sound region.  Fishing allowed him the opportunity to continue his research on the Sound’s marine mammals.  In 1981, he founded the North Gulf Oceanic Society, a federally recognized nonprofit research group.

This book is for those who would like to know more about Prince William Sound’s killer whales.  For more than a decade, the locally based research and education group, the North Gulf Oceanic Society (NGOS), has conducted and sponsored research on killer whale populations in Prince William Sound.  This book not only chronicles their important discoveries but also captures the excitement of the discovery process itself.  In these pages, the reader is invited to join this dedicated handful of scientists as they pursue their research attempting to understand the complex lives of this most fascinating and often maligned species.

“This is a gracefully written, naturalist’s book by one who has lived with the killer whales of Prince William Sound and who knows them in an intimacy that few scientists reach with a wild species.  It contains dozens of novel,  accurate insights into killer whale lives.  A delight for both the scientist and the general public.”  Kenneth S. Norris, PhD. Professor of Biology (Natural History) University of California

“This firsthand account of killer whale research in Alaska is filled with fascinating experiences and interesting findings. A must read for any whale enthusiast or visitor to Prince William Sound.” – Dr. John K. B. Ford, Research Directory, Vancouver Public Aquarium
