Far from being the end of outdoor activities, winter in Alaska ushers in a whole new realm of sports and recreation. While it is true that Alaska can be cold and dark in the winter, there are some real pluses for winter here. Reliably cold temperatures in much of the state means consistent snow cover for snowmachining, skiing, and other outdoor travel. Parts of the state that cannot be easily reached in the summer months open up in the winter. And...there are neither mosquitos flying around nor (usually) bears wandering about. Winter camping can be pleasant, if somewhat more challenging. All in all, winter's a great time to be outdoors in Alaska!
