It wasn't that long ago that parts of Alaska had blank areas because there was insufficient information to make a reliable map. Today, however, outdoors people can find detailed maps of all of the state. There are a variety of maps available for specific high interest portions of the state, including national and state parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, and more.
We sell several different kinds of map information.
The Atlas Atlas and Gazeteer is a perennial favorite even among people who have individual maps and software, simply because it's a quick and easy reference to the entire state that can fit on a coffee table.
The Alaska Road and Recreation maps (the green maps below) provide great coverage for popular recreation areas in SouthCentral Alaska. They have the advantage of covering most of the road system recreation areas without having to piece together topo maps.
The Trails Illustrated maps from National Geographic cover Alaska outdoors recreation off the beaten path and have the added advantage of being quite tough and very usable in the field.
Map software is a justifiably popular way of obtaining necessary map coverage for outdoors activities. We sell really good software from MapTech and National Geographic. This state of the art software allows users to custom design maps for field use, "fly" through an area in 3D as an aid to visualizing a trip, coordinate with GPS units, and much more. Maps printed on good quality paper can even be used in the field.
While not a map, Google Earth provides increasingly valuable photo coverage of portions of Alaska. It's also free, but really useful only with a broadband Internet connection.
