Perhaps Alaska's most popular big game animal, moose are found throughout the state except on the Aleutian Islands and most of the islands of the Southeat Panhandle. They look slow and dumb, but many hunters have found new respect for these largest of the deer. With antlers exceeding 70 inches in some areas, they can provide a massive trophy, but even more important to many Alaskans is the hundreds of pounds of high quality meat. Hunters should be prepared to carry hind quarters that weigh over 100 pounds -- and for this reason many hunters refuse to harvest a moose further than a mile from their transportation.
