Alaska
hunting is pretty slow in July, but it is a good time to be
preparing for fall hunting seasons. Also, if you have questions
about the regulations, the
hunting regulations for the 2005/2006 season are now available.
They can also be obtained at many locations around the state, and by
mail from ADF&G. Alaska regulations change on July 1 and are
current through the end of June the next year.
Sheep seasons begin around the state in August, and sheep hunters
are champing at the bit to get up into the sheep hills. There are a
number of interesting and useful sheep hunting threads on the Alaska
Hunting Forum if you are starting to prepare for such a hunt.

We have implemented a solution to speed up forum posting. This
should take care of most of the pressing forum speed problems,
although there remain a few slow functions.
OutdoorsDirectory.com is serving 55,000 pageviews per day right now,
so the server is under a fairly heavy load.
We have an interesting change ahead on OutdoorsDirectory.com This
will be of particular interest if you hunt out of state. I'm
not going to be more specific than that, but we're excited about it.
Watch for it in the weeks (okay...so I'm hoping for "weeks" here...I
hope it doesn't turn into "months") ahead.
Best of luck with hunting this season.....David

NEWS: July 27, 2005 -- Alaska Governor Murkowski has appointed

hunter safer and more manageable.

ADFG emergency order explains the exact area of the closure.
NEWS: July 19, 2005 --
ADF&G has closed moose hunting in a portion of GMU 18 (the
Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region) to allow moose to colonize the area more
effectively. There are no nonresident moose hunting seasons open in this
area. Hunting by residents allowed on federal lands in this area is also
closed.

are now available on the ADFG website.
NEWS: July 19, 2005 -- The Alaska Department of Fish and Game and
the US Fish and Wildlife Service are both
closing subsistence caribou hunting in the range of the Northern Alaska
Peninsula caribou herd. The herd has been in declining since the
1988 peak. Earlier ADFG had indicated there would be Tier II permits issued
for the fall season, but recent information led to a decision to not issue
them. Nutritional problems, predation by bears and wolves, and parasite
problems are implicated in the decline.
STORY: July 18, 2005 -- Anchorage
Daily News outdoors writer Craig Medred provides more detail and
perspective on how
two experienced Alaska outdoors people came to be killed in an apparent
predatory bear attack in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in a

Alaska hunters took only two grizzly out of a total that managers had hoped
could be as high as 81 in a bear control program in the upper Tanana and
Yukon areas, near Tok. ADF&G staff will obtain additional
information from permit holders to find out why the take was so low. 111
permits were issued, but it is not known how many baits were actually put
out by hunters.
RESOURCES: July 14, 2005 --
Alaska hunter harvest report information is available now online
from the Alaska Division of Wildlife Conservation. The reports cover many
years of data, and provide often requested harvest information.
NEWS: July 14, 2005 -- The Alaska
Division of Wildlife Conservation has reduced the number of hunting permits
for Delta Bison from 120 to 65 as a result of an unusually low
number of bison located in the summer post-calving survey.
ADF&G biologists are perplexed about the second year of decline, the
Fairbanks Daily News Miner reports.
NEWS: July 14, 2005 --
Results from permit drawing hunts and Tier II hunts can be seen online at
the ADF&G website. The permits themselves follow later, and should
be received by the end of July.
RESOURCES: July 7, 2005 -- ADF&G has set up a
web planner
designed to help visitors to the Fish and Game website find as much
information as possible about the fish or wildlife components of their
trips.
