Current month's Alaska hunting news | News | Index of past months

Please visit our sponsorsOK.  We are working towards adding additional stories and tips to this section.  If it has seemed that we have been heavy on News and light on Tips, you would be right.  But they are coming.  Please note that you should not rely on information on these pages for fishing regulations information: mistakes are possible and regulations change.  Check out the details yourself to be sure!

As I mentioned in the Hunting Alaska News and Tips for April 2005, this is the next evolution in how we are providing this information.  As we obtain new information, we will post it on the current page.  At the end of the month, we will be sending a simple text email to subscribers.  I really liked the Graphic Emails that we were sending, but too many of them were being caught and thrown out as spam.

If you like this kind of information, click the "subscribe" button in the box at right, and we will send you the email each month.

Meanwhile, your suggestions for content here are always welcome.

BOOKS: May 4, 2005 -- Alaska outdoors publisher Tony Russ is offering two new books that should be of interest to Alaska hunters, Upland Hunting in Alaska: A Bird Hunter’s Guide, and Sheep Stalking in Alaska: A Step-by-Step Guide.  The upland bird hunting book is due in early summer, and the sheep stalking book is due in mid-summer.  These books will be available for sale in our bookstore.  You can also sign up to receive email notification of these and other new books, video, DVD, etc.

NEWS: May 6, 2005 -- Southeast Alaska spruce grouse -- hooters -- are among the top subjects in this month's edition of Alaska Wildlife News. Also in this month's issue: rats, sleeper sharks and Dolly Varden trout.

NEWS: May 9, 2005 -- Portions of the Alaska Game Management Unit 17b have been closed to nonresident hunting of caribou, and portions now require non residents to have a registration permit available in Dillingham.  This is a signficant change in the hunting regulations and affects would-be float hunters on popular river drainages.

NEWS: MAY 11, 2005 -- The Alaska Division of Wildlife Conservation has published a number of moose management reports that will interest hunters in Alaska.  The reports cover: Arctic and western Alaska, Southcentral Alaska, Southeast Alaska, Unit 20 (Interior), and Interior and Northeast.  The agency maintains links to recent management reports on its website.

CALENDAR: May 27, 2005 -- The Kenai Peninsula Archery Club will be hosting a membership drive / BBQ / free 3d shoot near Soldotna on Saturday, June 4.  You can obtain additional information by contacting the club at kenaipeninsulaarchers@yahoo.com

NEWS: May 29, 2005 -- The State of Alaska's wolf control program resulted in 276 wolves this past winter, according  to the Fairbanks Daily News Miner.  This is about half of the hoped for number, but not bad, considering it is a volunteer program, said the state's wildlife agency boss.  Alaska is now also allowing hunters to bait grizzly bears in the Eastern Interior of Alaska, and they have at least initially proved to be more difficult to take in this way.  The News Miner also reports that no hunters baiting grizzlies in the Tok areas have yet taken bears.

CALENDAR: May 31, 2005 -- The National Wild Turkey Federation is forming a new chapter in Alaska.  For more information contact Dean Owen at 458-7380.  Alaska has no wild turkeys, but many Alaskans are interested in hunting turkeys.  A NWTF banquet is planned for Wasilla on July 30, 2005.  For more information contact Steve Trickett.
