Most
fishing news during August related to in-season changes in fisheries
regulations around the state. Silver salmon harvests in
Resurrection Bay are good, and it looks like
"a huge year for silvers", Ken Marsh reported in the Anchorage
Daily News. Northern Cook Inlet silver salmon runs are also
strong. Salmon and other fishing opportunities continue in
many parts of the state, but with colder weather activity starts to
taper off during the weeks ahead.

We are
making arrangements for something interesting on OutdoorsDirectory.com. I
won't spoil the news by getting specific about it, but I believe out-of-state
anglers especially will be interested. I'm not going to give a date
either, because sometimes these things take longer than I expect.....but hang on
for some new fun.
Good fishing.....David

NEWS
NEWS: August 27, 2005 --
Southeast Alaska king salmon regulations liberalized in early May of this year
to allow more harvest opportunity will be restricted starting August 31.
NEWS: August 27, 2005 -- The State of
Alaska has committed funding to the construction of new state fish hatcheries in
Anchorage and Fairbanks. The facilities will be complete by 2009.
NEWS: August 26, 2005 --
Sockeye salmon returns to the Mat-Su, declining for years, has surprised
biologists with a record low escapement this year. There are yet no
clear answers to the decline and low numbers this year.
NEWS: August 20, 2005 -- The
Kenai River / Russian River fly fishing only area is being extended until 5
September, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Large numbers of sockeye are still passing the lower river sonar counter, so
extra opportunity is warranted. The Anchorage Daily News reports that
this extra "flood of sockeye" is baffling to biologists.
NEWS: August 16, 2005 --
A portion of the Nick Dudiak (Homer Spit Fishing Hole) will be only open to
youth 15 and under all day August 20th. The rest of the lagoon
will be open to all.
NEWS: August 10, 2005 --
August 15 is the deadline to return 2005 Upper Cook Inlet salmon personal use
permits to the Department of Fish and Game. These permits were required
to dipnet at the Kenai and Kasilof rivers, and to gillnet at the Kasilof River.
Permits must be returned, even if no one used them, or even if no fish were
caught.
NEWS: August 6, 2005 -- The
Alaska Outdoor Journal reports that the
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has
closed access to the Russian River fishery each evening 11 PM until 6 AM daily.
NEWS: August 4, 2005 -- The
wounding and eventual death of a human-savvy brown bear sow with three large
cubs on the Russian River points out problems of mixing large number of
anglers and bears at this popular Kenai Peninsula fishery. The Anchorage
Daily News reported that
the state's chief bear biologist believes the problems of bears in the area is a
result of fish waste at cleaning stations.
NEWS: August 2, 2005 --
Sockeye salmon fishing regulations on the Situk River have been relaxed again
now that escapement goals for this Yakutat area river have been met.
NEWS: August 2, 2005 -- ADF&G reminds anglers that the
portion of Taiya Inlet in the Haines / Skagway area of northern Southeast Alaska
where king salmon regulations had been relaxed to allow the retention of smaller
king salmon is now again restricted to 28 inch kings. Fishery
managers there are also reminding anglers about the closure around Pullen Creek
remains in effect.
