News & Tips Current month's Alaska fishing news | News | Index of past months
This is the first month of Fishing Alaska news and tips. I am going to tell you up front that I am not a fishing expert. When we lived in SE Alaska, I fished quite a bit, but I am far from being an expert.p> But we have some good sources and collaborators, and we are working to provide you with good and helpful information. I hope you will find this increasingly helpful. Suggestions for content here are always welcome.

FORUM: April 18, 2005 -- The International Pacific Halibut Commission is considering a proposal to further limit halibut harvests by the sportfishing charter fleet. This issue has been covered in a number of posts on the Alaska fishing forum. AKCAPT explains the issue in a sample letter that anglers can send to decision makers. This is an important issue that anglers will do well to pursue. BOOKSTORE: April 19, 2005 -- Chris Batin has released a new DVD version of Underwater Secrets of Catching Halibut, Rockfish and Lingcod. This is a good resource for anyone interested in knowing what these deep dwellers are doing down below while we are working hard up above to try to catch them. NEWS: April 22, 2005 -- The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has promulgated an emergency order prohibiting the filleting or heading of king and coho salmon or lingcod during much of the summer season in SE Alaska. This will make it possible for ADFG staff to learn more about fish populations from creel sampling programs. FORUMS: 26 April 2005: We have made the OutdoorsDirectory.com forum search function more useful by adding check boxes for forums that you want to search. Many words are found on more than one forum. For example, if you wanted to do a search on air taxis for fishing, you could check the fishing forum box, and find MANY fewer hits than if you allowed hits from all forums. This feature is available from the main forum search page. NEWS: 28 April 2005: King salmon caught in the Kenai River drainage may not be filleted, headed or disfigured in such a way as to prevent determination of overall length from May 1 - July 14. This Alaska Department of Fish and Game emergency order is designed to allow evaluation of the slot harvest strategy. The fish may be processed later. Read the emergency order >>> NEWS: 30 April 2005: Some of the rainbow trout in Willow Creek are sporting numbered green tags and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is asking that anglers who collect these marked fish contact them. The point of the study is to better understand this population, and your reports will help. Read the news release >>>
