Being Caribou - For
more than a thousand miles, Heuer and Allison traveled the roadless,
trailless, structureless expanse of northern Yukon and Alaska. Both on
foot and on skis, they tracked caribou over four mountain ranges, hundreds
of passes, and dozens of river. To keep up, they knew they would have to
move, act, and even think like caribou, skiing and walking with no
schedule, no route plan, and no objective other than finding and staying
with the wild herd. The result was an adventure that brought them face to
face with wolves, hungry grizzly bears, voracious, mosquitoes, and Arctic
blizzards. Physically and mentally exhausted, the young couple found
themselves on the cusp of a different way of knowing, and, after months of
migrating, walked into a dimension of consciousness neither had
experienced before.

Alaska Wildlife
Calendar 2009 A female polar bear (Urus maritimus) watches
carefully over her two cubs. Pregnant females search for denning areas in
late October and November. Though pregnant bears usually concentrate for
denning on islands in teh Russian and Canadian Arctic and on Greenland and
Spitsbergen, some denning occurs along hte north Alaska coast, especially
in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Cubs are born in the den in
December, and a litter of two is the most common. The cubs leave the den
with their mother in late March or early April, at which point they weigh
about 15 pounds. They will stay with their mothe until they are about 28
months. Female polar bears can mate again about the time they separate
from their cubs and usually give birth to a litter every three years.

sunny conditions...living for the now.
