Winter is settling in to the North, but interesting days are ahead. Most important: the most significant of our cycle of elections is coming next week. We hear it all the time, but I’ll say it again: our votes are important. I am overseas this fall, and my wife and I have already voted by absentee ballot. Maybe our “no on 3” (Alaska bear bait ban initiative) votes will be among the first in the hopper. I urge you to put yours in there, too, along with your votes for national, state and local offices.

I have long been a member of the Alaska Outdoor Council and I recommend it to all Alaska outdoorsmen. Dick Bishop, the current president, Jennifer Yuhas, the Executive Director, and the board and many other volunteers work very hard for us. Their mission statement says it: "Dedicated to the preservation of outdoor pursuits in Alaska - hunting, fishing, trapping, and public access - and conservation of the habitats upon which they depend." The winter drawing application period ends December 6. This is the deadline to apply for Kodiak spring bear hunts (for nonresidents), Unit 1(D) Spring bear, Unit 23 brown bear hunt, fall sheep, goat, and Koyukuk moose. The next Draw application period will be Nov 1 thru Dec 6, 2004. You may apply for Draw hunts by either completing the online applications or mailing in paper applications.
