snogos and hunting
Posted by martentrapper on Jul 06 2005
I'm curious what you will be hunting from a snogo. As a non res, I don't think there will be a winter moose season open for you. You may get to hunt caribou west of Nulato, but that is iffy. Depends on where they migrate to for the winter. I suspect most of the winter hunting will be for wolf back across the river. There is a large untimbered area back against the hills across the river.
Any snogo you get will be a trade off. It would be nice to have the tundra for in the timber, and a larger powered machine for river/trail travel. Since this is your first year, 2 machines probably isn't financially practical.
I would suggest a mid size machine, long track, with more power than a tundra. The skandic 440 LT has been getting good reviews from owners. It is worth considering. Being new to snogos, I suggest you stay away from wide and super wide track machines. They are heavy. Float good, but still get stuck. Travel around nulato will involve alot of time on ice. Overflow will be an everpresent problem and you won't enjoy getting a heavy machine out of the overflow.
Polaris makes as good a snogo as any, but their mid size machines are slightly larger than other brands, powerwise. A 2006 Polaris 550 RMK will set you back around 5500 bucks. It will have electronic reverse, which you will like. It will not be too heavy. You can mount a rack on the back, which I feel is a very important addition. With the snow conditions around nulato, i would also recommend getting a machine with a longer lug on the track. 1.25 in. lug is about right. 2 in. is too much. Skidoo also makes some other machines in the 550 size range, as well as one with a 380, that is good on gas.
Buy a plastic tobaggon for a sled. It will be relatively inexpensive, as sleds go, and will serve your purpose.
