Montana vs Rem798
Posted by elmerkeithclone on Apr 29 2006
I have not seen the Remington 798 as of yet. However it is suppose to be the same gun as the Charles Daly only with a laminated stock. They are coming off the same production line as the Dalys and are using the same tooling so I would imagine they are same gun with a different name attatched.

I bought two of the recent production Dalys and can tell you that they are a good solid action. However they are not in the same league with the Montana. The same will be true about the Rem 798. The ones that I got both had terrible triggers. I have adjusted hundreds of triggers in my day and these were the worst. They are probably the most complex, complicated, non-user friendly triggers that I have ever messed with. If you go with the 798 plan on getting a Bold or Timmney trigger from the git go. Basicly they are same old rugged 98 mauser that have stood the test of time only they have some modern features.

The old saying you get what you pay for applies here. I payed less than $300 ea for the Dalys and the Montana will cost you 3 times that much. In my mind they are worth every penny of it. Their actions are squared, lapped and finished to perfection. They are just plain nice.

On a side note; I have never like belted cartriges because they don't feed as smooth and can't be made to do so. The Montana barreled action can be had in the 338 lapua mag. This cartrige will do anything the 375 will do and more. Just something to concider. It is basicly a 416 Rigby necked down to 338.
