I have a model 94 32 special which is pretty much the same as a 30-30.  For the life of me I can't figure out why they made it.  It was a gift from my Grandpa when I was 13.

Anyway, I have killed 5 moose and two black bears with it.  One moose was charging and I missed the first shot...don't think I would have got off the second shot with a bolt action.  It dropped in it's tracks 8 steps away with the second shot going lengthwise right down his hump.  Also, shot a medium sized black bear at about 50' right in the head.  He didn't even take a breath after the shot.

They are fine, just not the same as a large bore rifle and you need to realize what you have in your hand.  It's not a cannon, and you shouldn't use it that way.  Open sights at open sight ranges and it will work fine.  I never took a shot longer than 100yds and most were under 50 yds.

My brother borrowed it on our last "real" moose hunt on purpose. He could have used a "real" gun.  The rest of us had larger guns.  But he was the one who got the 60" bull.

Also, I would hunt brown bears with it, but it woudn't be my first choice and I would not hunt the way I would with a higher power rifle.

I now use a 30-06 and I like it fine for anything.
