I think it is a good choice. For the largest animals in Alaska the 400 grain bullets would make more sense. Save the 500's for Africa. The Lott has the added advantage of being able to handle factory 458 WM. Reloading supplies for it such as cases and bullets are easy to find everywhere.
Is it "to much" for US hunting? Probably, but the big bores have a certain appeal that many of us like, including myself.
Remember, big guns can be loaded down to little gun levels. But you can not do the opposite.
